我原本抱着热切的期待希望能够了解更多人的想法，尤其是“文化教父”——梁文道先生的伟论。从他的部落格，我阅读到一篇文章《月经管理》，叙述工厂管理人为了能够提高女性的工作效率，派避孕药给女性，从而提高工厂的生产率。不但如此，还有各种各样的文章，他都描写得贴切，贴近我们身边，但不失真理名言，让我茅舍顿开，印象深刻。在键盘底下，他能够把生活的文化以文字呈现与大家的眼前，实在了不起。
可是，在这个讲座后，我有点失望，因为讲座偏重于探讨政治，偏向于叙述大马的媒体自由与言论自由。在讲座的开始，主持人分别邀请各位嘉宾轮流发表演讲，最后才轮到梁文道先生主讲。“街坊学者”在这种情况下，当真是英雄无用武之地。冠有“文化教父”与“街坊学者”的梁文道先生来到马来西亚演讲，我们不是应该与他多探讨“部落格如何贴近群众及对群众的影响吗？”或者讨论“键盘下有着什么样文化？”抑或“文化书写又要如何贴近生活？”脑子内出现很多问号。我们的特别嘉宾的强项在于走入人群，发现文化。可是，在这个讲座，题目的焦点被模糊了，只剩下政治的探讨。除了政治，我们已经很难发表对文化的看法。唉。。。希望破灭了，我带着沉重的心情回学校。

The Chinese in Malaysia, are caught between a rock and a hard place. Vote for Barisan Nasional and put up with racism, inefficiency and corruption. You will see your rights as a citizen being slowly whittled away.
Vote for the opposition and no development or maintenance funds for your area. Anyway, with all the gerrymandering, the Chinese votes can't make a significant dent on Umno stranglehold on power.
So the Chinese bury their heads in the sand. They get busy earning money through legal as well as illegal means. Malaysian Chinese bookies and fake credit card syndicates are world-renowned.
Some of our most capable brains end up in Hong Kong, Singapore and other countries. The more resourceful ones find Umno partners and go into big business. The rest of us mere mortals work our butts off to save money.
While it is debatable whether the Chinese are still in control of the economy or not, there is no doubt that a small number of well-connected Chinese businessmen are among the wealthiest people in Malaysia.
However, the vast majority of the Chinese in Malaysia are in the lower middle class, the middle class and upper middle class. They are bank-tellers, doctors, engineers, farmers, hawkers, peddlers, small traders, technicians, teachers, etc. There are about seven million Chinese in Malaysia. Common sense will tell you that not all of them are wealthy.
The Chinese are fed up with the government but they really feel helpless because they have been cowed into submission.
Fortunately, our traditional work ethics come to our rescue. We work hard to save money and send our children overseas and hope that they will have a better life there and be treated as first-class citizens.

· Canada is a very progressive country.
· Canada is one of the G7 countries.
· Canada is one of the highest per capital income in the world now.
· Canada is one of the most developed countries in the world now.
· Canada allows both English and French as its official languages.
· Canada builds many 100% government subsidized French primary and secondary schools and French medium universities.
· Canada has very liberal policy in education and languages.
· Ratio of English speaking citizens vs. French speaking citizens is almost similar to malays and Chinese in Malaysia.
What is Malaysia now? Discrimination, discrimination and more discrimination!
Malaysia has one of the lowest tax rates in the world. Our foreign investment has been dwindling since China and Vietnam opening its doors. If one takes poison a little bit a day, he will feel sick and die young unless he stops taking it before it is too late.
NEP is a poison, and it is the source of all troubles facing the Bolehland before our eyes. Bolehland will get weaker as its natural resources get depleted.
Most of its citizens are only strong in consumption activities and pretty soon - Burma would be ahead of us economically. Burma will surely thank Umno for the easy contest.
It is a sorry state of affair. We have already lost so many talents to Singapore. The really capable people do not get any chance in this Bolehland. The future is bleak, however good enough for mediocre - those who have no ambition, at least for the time being.
In reality, we want to ask: How long this thing will go on? Malaysia will eventually lose out to most other Asia members. It is just a matter of time.
I fail to understand when we are probably spending a few billion dollars to "cure" MAS, then there is Proton, Bank Negara screw ups and cannot forget Perwaja steel!
We can't ignore all the fail projects too……….a few millions here a few millions there will add up to a pretty penny. Where does all this money comes from? Petronas? EPF? And how all this money flowing out still translates to a 5% growth in GDP?
In Bolehland, everything is ok. We accept everything graciously. Corruption no problem. GLCs losses no problem. Police abuse no problem. Sex scandal no problem.
This MAS loss is not the first or the last, also no problem. We also have accepted same present government ever since independence that created all these wonderful news without problem too. This is Bolehland. Everything Boleh. Keep it up Bolehland people.
Now, people like us have to bail them out……….No wonder, no wonder one says we have 1st class facility but 3rd class mentality. (I think we are worst than that……….)
What we are actually concerned is a system whereby bumis and non-bumis could find a reasonable living together, and equal opportunity for development in our own country.
The amount of money wasted, and siphoned out is so huge that perhaps if the fund is managed properly, today you and I need not to pay any income tax. And if people demand changes, the politicians in power would use racial issue to manipulate and threaten to shut the people off.
As what one always says to me: "Freedom and fairness is not free, you have to fight for it!"
Nope. You got the equation wrong.
BN won was because there is no equal playing field. In a free democratic country, all parties are given adequate airtime on national television, newspaper, Late Show with David Letterman, etc.
Here, coverage is only for BN. Each time you switch on the TV, you will see our Bapa Slogan sleepy face. You don't have a chance to catch a glimpse of any of our oppositions figure. Tell me when was the last time you watch Anwar on national TV?
All the draconian laws in Malaysia prohibit free speech, and our local mainstream media will have to abide by it. Try to switch on to any of our TV news at 8 o'clock later and the answer is very clear there.
In conclusion, our oppositions are not weak. It is the unfair level of playing field. Period.
But of course non-malays, especially the non-malays born after 1957 will see things differently.
First of all, they did not choose to come to Malaysia, especially not with its present system of government. It is not their fault that the British, more than one hundred years ago, brought in so many Chinese and Indians, and made the Umno malays feel insecure.
It is not their fault that many of the immigrants, with the permission of the British, toiled to be successful and that made the Umno malays felt threatened by it. And since when did success become something you have to be punished for instead of celebrating?
It is not their fault that English is the dominant language of technology, science, diplomacy, commerce, and just about any branch of knowledge and has been entrenched in Malaysia since 1786.
They can't understand why the government is hell bent on destroying the system of government left behind by the British, a system that Singapore kept, enhanced and used to become one of the richest, most well planned, most advanced, competitive, cleanest and admired countries on earth, despite being just a rock the size of island.
They feel puzzled that the Umno-controlled government talks with a forked tongue - asking Malaysians to be united and at the same time - asking the non-malays to accept second class citizenship, and then Tun Razak own son Najib threatened to bathe a keris (dagger) with Chinese blood. To them, this is a contradiction.
Why were Chinese and Indians in the armed forces here Malaysia etc, in significant numbers before the 1970s? And there are a lot of lucrative deals in the army and police, and some are below the table and some like it that way.
"Why is that there are so few Chinese in the armed forces?"
Well, I think you know the answer why. Like so many government institutions, there was a form of ethnic cleansing in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, which saw the determined push of non-malays out in favor of increasing the number of malays both at the rank and at the leadership positions.
That is why you see a dramatic change in the complexion of the government if you compare, say the 60s and 90s. That is why non-malays avoid government institutions, not just the armed forces - it is the same with organizations like Bank Negara, EPF, etc.
Over the years, the Malaysia government institutions have evolved into very hostile environments for the non-malays.
Look at Singapore, the Chinese are in the army etc, so are the Indians and the malays. Yes there was an issue with the malay pilots. But there are significant Indians there in the civil service as an example since the Chinese are majority there.
Anyhow, onto the comments that touch on Singapore experience. Yes, making English the medium of instruction has served Singapore well. Just the other day, I was at a conference held by an MNC and employees came from all over Asia.
One of the most senior people in from the Singapore office was a malay and he was highly articulate, and obviously made it to such a high position based on his capabilities. And he is not the first Singaporean malay I met that held an important position in an MNC.
I always wondered why some Malaysian malays in some other forums say that if Malaysia adopts Singapore system, they will not survive. The Singaporean malays I met are doing just fine. Yes, many Malaysian malays hate Lee Kuan Yew and indeed Lee may have been a racist, but the Singapore system existed before him, he refined it, and people who came after him keep refining it, and it works well.
Anyway, yes it is anecdotal but nonetheless, these Singaporean malays I met are doing well. Whenever I go to Singapore, I see Singaporean malays working productively, and everyone in Singapore is virtually guaranteed a decent house.
They have access to world class education, world class government planning, world class landscaping, world class medical facility, world class public safety, world class shopping, world class transportation, world class working environment (and due to Singapore high per capita income and strong Singapore dollar, they earn enough to afford good stuff to
You want to know why so many Malaysians choose to be discriminated in white man's land or go south? It is not because of the NEP.
It is because our right to be Malaysians has been questioned. It is one thing to have to sacrifice for your fellow citizens. It is another thing to sacrifice for a citizen of a country where you don't even belong.
The facts:
(1) Orang Asli Negritos are the first inhabitants in this land
(2) Proto malays came from Yunan in China
(3) Deutro malays came from Indonesia
(4) Malays are Hindus/Buddhists for 2000 years
(5) Harun and Razak plot the 1969 riot
(6) Social contract rewriting after 1969 riot
(7) Bumis term never exist before the 1969 riot
(8) lie - Blame Chinese control economic 70%
(9) lie - Blame Chinese/Tamil schools for national disunity
(10) lie - Blame Singapore government suppress malays

Malaysia being in such a sad state, I can only see decline for decades to come.
May be even for centuries.
May be the rise of China can give the bright sparks of Malaysia some leverage to change society, but I doubt whether the ingrained culture of failure can be reversed.
Not the UK, not the US, not in most parts of the world, the culture of failure always reproduced itself generation after generation.
Change has to come from external influence and not from the inside.
Malaysia has never been in any education race, in the sense of fair and free race, not even locally, let alone globally. The institutions of higher learning served to issue "certificates of fitness" for employment and not to provide education per se.
It is all in a dream or in playing a role in movie until globalisation sets in. The day of reckoning is near. It is unfair that the person who brought the dilemma to his followers enjoyed the image of the saviour without impunity, and yet he claimed that the government of the day was wrong to change the course he had set.
The true enemy for progress in Malaysia is the BN, its management and system……….nothing else. Malaysia will fall further south Singapore due to self inflicting.
Good and proper education is the foundation of a successful multi racial and religious nation. Education is not just about academic results alone. Decades of aggressive and damaging politic of race and religion had a long term and permanent consequences on the country and people.
The incompetent, narrow, selfish and shortsighted leaders had failed Malaysia and its ordinary people for far too long. It is very sad to see a promising country lead by donkeys and monkeys into battle.
We continue to churn out graduates in great numbers. Very soon we will get our name into the Guinness Book of Record for producing the most number of unemployable graduates in the world!
Some of them are now working as domestic servants, office boys, taxi drivers. Obviously something is very wrong with our education system, or is it something else more "cynical"?
No hope for Malaysia. We are slowly and surely going downhill. By year 2020 the whole economy will collapse.
On the contrary (Sorry to deliberate misunderstand one, but this is too good to pass up). Education in Malaysia is all about race. Unfortunately, it is the wrong race. The authorities are more concerned with which race you belong to - Chinese, Indian, Malay, etc. Tell them that we belong to the human race.
Our education system is in backyard. We were behind 30 years and how are we going to catch up. Just propaganda here and there will not bring us anyway. Malaysia is very busy brainwashing the students and not teaching them how to brainstorm to solve problems!
We lost it long ago and nothing left.
Stereotyping someone base on their race and religion just prove that you are being utterly inconsiderate and racist - no difference from Adolf Hitler.
If you are dissatisfied with unfair policies imposed by the government, do something constructive rather as posting hateful and non-sensible messages here.
True, the policies are upheld by the ruling party which are overwhelmingly malays, but there are more positively ways to encourage the abolishment of such policies, such as - promoting racial understanding by putting yourself in the shoes of a malay, than to disseminate rude and spiteful remarks here, which serves to do nothing but to create more angers and tensions against each other.
One thing you got it right - the way the government works is all to blame.
Our political elites have been maintaining draconian laws and racist policies to keep themselves in power while enriching their own cronies at the same time - without sparing malays or commoners of other races.
Direct your anger there, do whatever you want to those who are really responsible. Don't bark up the wrong tree.
The writer shows a serious lack of knowledge and understanding of the role of MCA in the pre-independence era. Not only was MCA was a political tool of the British colonial power, other Alliance parties like MIC and Umno were also political tools of the British.
The British made use of MCA, MIC and Umno to fight the Malay Left and the Malayan Communist Party (MCP) in order to protect its economic interests in the then Malaya.
The Chinese were confined to various Chinese new villages under the Briggs' plan to curb the influence of the communist party. MCA was then granted a licence to run the Million Dollar lottery scheme by the British authority to make easy money from the Chinese community. In return, the MCA had to use part of the profit to win the hearts of the Chinese in the new villages. This strategy worked well to serve the interests of the British master during the pre-independence days.
When the time has come to give independence to Malaya, the British kept its promise by working only with Umno, MCA and MIC. On the other hand, the real independence fighters, including some prominent Malay Left leaders, were arrested and locked up in prisons. And the war against the MCP continued with greater intensity.
But true leader like Tan Cheng Lock were sidelined by other MCA and Umno leaders in the run up to the independence negotiations. Cheng Lock had promised the Chinese community to present the general demands of the Chinese community to the British. But he was barred from attending the final round of talks in London. The MCA was represented by HS Lee and Tan Tong Hai.
According to the late Tunku Abdul Rahman (in one of his writings), Tan Tong Hai threw the entire general demands document into a wastepaper basket in a London hotel room instead of bringing it up at the negotiation table. That is the reason why I often tell the young people that the betrayal of MCA could be traced back to its inception. As a result of this unforgivable sell-out, Chinese Malaysians were treated like second-class citizens in our land. The Chinese were stuck with the 'non-bumis' label thanks to MCA.
It is people like Leong Yew Koh who instigated Tunku to strip the citizenship and teaching licence of foremost Chinese education pioneer Lim Lian Geok. Check with Loot Ting Yee. He is one of the mother tongue education pioneers who can verify my story.
The entire history of MCA is filled with betrayals, crimes and sins. They have failed to preserve and protect the interests and rights of the Chinese community which they have claimed to represent.
Take a closer look at these scandals - the deposit-taking-cooperative scandal, the Aik Hua Holdings scandal, the Chang Min Thien Fund scandal, the MCA JE Fund scandal, it is a never-ending list. And guess what? Most of the victims of these scandals were MCA members and supporters.
Mind you, it was MCA leaders that instigated the closure of the original Bai Xiao (SJKC Damansara) in Petaling Jaya. It was also the efforts of SOS Damansara Action Committee and the pressure mounted by DAP, DongJiaoZong and the entire Chinese community that brought about the unprecedented speedy construction of the new SJKC Damansara in Tropicana.
It is a great shame that MCA leaders do not even bother to get accreditation for the certificates, diplomas and degrees courses offered by TAR College (TARC). Recently, a young Malaysian Chinese boy's application was rejected by the Royal Malaysian Police simply because the academic qualifications he obtained from the MCA sponsored TARC were not recognised by both National Accreditation Board and Public Service Department.
Under the current MCA leadership, the Chinese community can only request for a new Chinese primary school when one is 'dead'. And all these years, the allocation of funds for Chinese primary schools remains unfair and unjust; only about 2.4% of the total budget is given to the Chinese stream and about 1% given to the Tamil stream. The rest was all given to the malay (national type) primary schools. None of the MCA 'tai kohs' (mainly Chinese educated) dare to make noise on this subject.
Yes, Lee Kuan Yew was not totally wrong. The Umno-led BN government has been systematically marginalising the Chinese and other non-malay communities. And what did MCA leaders like Chan Kong Choy and Ong Ka Ting do about it? And why were they keeping so timidly quiet when Umno ultras like Hisham and Khairy make all sorts of racist remarks and even waved a keris time and again shamelessly?
MCA is indefensible. That is why none of the MCA leaders dare to show up for the debate in Machap. And for the same reason, none of them have the courage to rebut me on all the historical facts I raised in my book entitled 'Accomplice? Coward? Culprit? The role of MCA in the Chinese community'.
